After
fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast lesion,
with an incidence of 18% - 20%. Fibroadenomas are found accidentally during
breast self-examination or during routine clinical breast examination,
mammography, or ultrasonography.
CLINICAL PRESENTATIONFibroadenomas are usually asymptomaic. However, in cases in which an intratumoral hemorhange has ooccured, pain could be the initial presenting symptom. Such a presentation is more commoon in pregnant or lactating women.
In general, fibroadenomas present as a single tumor, varying in size from 1 cm to 4 cm. Multiple tumors are found in about 10%-12% of cases, and they can occur either simultaneously or metachronously.
